Firstly we have...

Loosely based around the Thames Valley and Midlands, contemporary folk band The Occasional Orchestra are thrilled to be returning to the Wallingford Food Festival. Built around the original songs of singer songwriter Darrell Mitchell, the band’s energetic and accomplished performances have earned them a firmly established place on the indie/folk scene.

2013 was a good year for the band, seeing the release of their album 22 Arches – 11 songs loosely based around the band’s experiences growing up in Wallingford.Local appearances included the Bunkfest main stage and the Wallingford Corn Exchange, in addition to clubs and festivals up and down the country.

This year, the band have released a new download single, Paint the Truth, which is inspired by the World War 1 centenary and celebrates the work of the Great War artists. A new album is planned for early next year.

The band was formed early 2013, when Chris Cox, John Keston-Hole and Nick Clack, who had previously played together, decided to collaborate again in a new outfit, this time to play some Americana & Tex-Mex music

Initially, Chris was to be the upright bass player, but in early rehearsals he occasionally added an acoustic rhythm guitar to add to John’s electric guitar which instantly gave a more rounded and satisfying sound. He suggested a few of his own songs from his back catalog to further explore this new combination, these worked so well that they have now defined the direction of the band and he has started writing new songs especially for The Missing Persians

Of course, Chris now not being available to play bass meant the band required a replacement, he personally set about auditioning a few players and came up with Chas Maguire, who slotted into the band straight away. It would be hard to now imagine the band without Chas

By this time, the band had also found a natural music direction and could no longer be adequately termed Americana or Tex-Mex. The new songs touch on many different musical genres, Country Blues, Rock, Jazz, Soul, Funk & Reggae along the way, but each is developing a unique Missing Persians style

We have already been in the studio and some ‘rough mixes’ are available for listening to on the MUSIC section of this website

Also keep an eye on the gig page, as we are now starting to perform more regularly, having previously divided our time between drinking tea, eating fish and chips, rehearsing and recording (in that order)…

They will be plaing on Saturday 17th May. Thanks for coming guys!

Secondly, we are delighted to have the RSPB joining us.

“The RSPB will be at Wallingford Food Festival speaking about their work with farmers, and the importance of wildlife-friendly farming. Feed nature too - bring all the family along to make bird apple feeders for hanging in your garden! Find out about fun things you can do at home for nature, and discover what the RSPB is getting up to in the local area.”

For more information please follow the RSPB on Twitter or Facebook

Thirdly, we have the Food Safety and Hygiene team from SODC joiing use for the festival.

With over 450 local food and drink producers in Oxfordshire. The festival showcases many of these passionate producers. Come and see for yourself!
