About

On the 14th May the 2011 Wallingford Food Festival, the first organised by the Wallingford Food Festival Community Enterprise took place at Bridge Villa Campsite.

The food festival came about following a brief conversation between two local food producers. This idea formulated in late February 2011 and in a little under 8 weeks the festival had gone from idea to reality! Working with the SODC, Wallingford Town Council and other organisations it was all systems go and the festival went ahead.

Around 1500 visitors attended and the weather was perfect for the 24 producers who signed up. The local businesses also played a part in supporting the festivals with printing, waste management, audio/visual and many other key elements.

The decision was to run a festival in 2012 and this resulted in another successful day. Over 2500 visitors attended to watch chefs demonstrate recipes using local ingredients and a kitchen supplied by a new sponsor VZUG. Gary Jones from Le Manoir demonstrated his skills and passion and with his demo.

Whilst this was going on the festival orginasation was being put on a more formal foundation and the aims of the festival are:-

  • to promote the value of “locally” produced food from meat, vegetables, fruit, eggs, etc and processed food such as bread, cakes, jams, preserves, beers, wines, meals etc.
  • to show the sustainability of locally produced food and the part seasonality plays in food availability
  • to educate people on how food is produced and how to process it
  • to promote Wallingford as a key market town in South Oxfordshire

The festival is put on with the help of many local businesses and is a real example of the power of community. The support from these businesses means that festival is financially sustainable and all funds raised pay for services needed and any remaining money is reserved, part from a small amount for expenses, for the following years festival.

We are proud that in our second year of running the festival won a Highly Commended Award from Tourism South East!  Confirmation that the festival has value and supports the communities that are involved with the festival, including the local community in Wallingford.

Please come along to the festival and sample the produce from some of the best producers in south Oxfordshire and surrounding areas and watch some of our local Chefs show what can be done with this range of fabulous food and drink.

See you there!
